The history of Jews in America is not the migration from middle Europe to the Northeast. Jewish migration to America started long before that. Then entry points were Galveston and Charleston. From there, Jews spread horizontally throughout the South. Prior to the Civil War, American Jewish history was a story of a widely distributed community quite distinct from the Northeast immigration, which is what most of us think of as Jewish American history
