Attorney Autumn Gonzalez will lead a workshop that trains volunteers to accompany undocumented and asylum-seeking communities as they navigate often intimidating situations, such as going to an ICE check-in or to a legal appointment.
Providing a ride and moral support can mean the difference between someone successfully complying with a judge’s orders, and someone ending up with a deportation order because they missed a court hearing or check-in. Rapid responders are trained to observe and document ICE actions in our region to ensure the protection of immigrants’ legal rights, and provide resources to families in the event someone is taken by ICE. Knowledge of Spanish is not required; most volunteers do not speak Spanish but are still able to provide much-needed support.
The program will be open to CBH members as well as to members of other religious groups, the university, and Davis as a whole. Those who’ve already had training are welcome to get a refresher. It will provide not only training, but also an opportunity for us to reach out to and make connections with other communities around the issue of immigrant justice, which many of our members consider a key part of their Jewish values
